Her spirit bade his dazzling gaze paint;
thus brilliance beneath the sun and its
saffron blaze. Though sweet illusion of
looks had delight; the passionate scene
ahead set the stage for plight.
What secrets lie behind her olive eyes;
Lo! she burned as constellation before
her staunch ideals. Hence we chose to
listen while others chose to shun; thus
veiled beneath the sheets the shadows
and she are one.
Hearing the earth change its tune;
Lifts her lips and kissed the moon.

There is such mystery in that gaze, and it makes me very curious both about her and the painter… I feel almost like I’m eavesdropping on secrets.

Nice to see one of your own prompt poems. The internal rhymes work very well, & the piece hints at mystery, danger, sensuality. I saw the film, but don’t recall her plight. I like your lines /thus veiled beneath the sheets the shadows/and she are one/–terrific word smithing.

Vermeer is one of my favourite Old Masters. I think his own life is analogous to your poem of The Girl with The Pearl Earring.

A beautifully written poem.

I’ve not seen the movie nor read the book — it is on my list of to-dos. So must take the poem at face value — pun intended. And as I do — the final couplet is so very beautiful. And I always wonder when I see a portrait or a sculpture, what rally is behind those eyes at that very moment the artist is at work.
Beautifully penned as always.

The eyes of the artist can produce a beauty in their painting that even the subject might be jealous of. This is because he had found something deeper than her skin that reveals much more. How well you wrote this poem Sanaa.
