Song of a poetess dreaming

Black is the aura of sea that plunges
into delirious vision
which to another is known as dream.

Neither sunshine nor cloud
offer comfort here
as I struggle to hold on
and gasp for air.

In my sleep, I see you
with arms outstretched
battling shadows
and fury of white waves.
Could the impossible ensue,
so that I would turn my thoughts
upon eloquent lips
feel adrenaline rush
as every pore of my being is set
on fire.

It is then that I blink
as recognition washes over me,
you are gone
and once again, I find myself
being led
away by the sea.

Dreaming is drowning
willfully
as spirit is released
from the clutches of fear;
it is both essence of dark
and a gateway to light.

Oh I knew the Pond was going rise up in a blue roar to this prompt … The submersions and flow and float and drown of this is pure gleaming water. Poetry is most itself when it dreams!

    • Sanaa says:

Aww gosh! ❀️ Thank you so much, Brendan πŸ˜€ so glad you liked it! ❀️

    it is both essence
    of dark and a gateway
    to light.

Beautifully described Sanaa to be seen as giving a position of contrast!

  3. Dreaming is elemental; I wrote about fire and you wrote about water, Sanaa. Dreaming and drowning are so closely tied and you have expressed this so well in your poem. I love the sound of ‘plunges’ and ‘gasp’, and the the lines:
    ‘battling shadows
    and fury of white waves’.
Yes, ”Dreaming is drowning… essence / of dark and a gateway / to llght’.

  4. Splendid! And oh, what deep truth in that last verse.

  5. Old Egg says:

How beautiful, how sad this poem is Sanaa as the loss is constantly in the speakers mind. Often in life we have life changing moments which change us for ever as our plans for the future are shattered.

  6. Kerry says:

    Dreaming is drowning
    willfully as spirit is
    released from
    the clutches of fear..

This is a most profound conclusion to the dreamscape.

Ah, dreaming is drowning indeed. This pathway to a dreamland where we lose and gain at the same time is of a certain ethereal beauty, which comes alive in your words. Beautifully done.

  16. My list of Favorites by Sanaa is growing. This is pure deliciousness. The way the speaker lets us wonder inside her dreams, how her lines are both warning and reassurance–“Dreaming is drowning”, but through it we can find release. This is full of quotable lines, of images that speak the clearest of messages in the way they shift behind cloudy dreams.

    Love, love, love!
