Of dreams and dragonflies

Water nymph, gliding upon a lotus
hovers back and forth, as though
pulling aside a memory.

The trouble is that, we believe we
have time but in reality time’s like
the course of a setting sun.

Water nymph, lend me wisdom
of change and light, lest tradition
crops my wings and sets me aside.

We touch destiny without going
too deep, feeding on hope and
 slipping by obsidian sky.

Water nymph fiery, stout and great
let me bloom as a lotus, come
give me dreams that fly.

Process notes: The dragonfly is associated with symbolic meaning of change.
The pink lotus flower is a representative of what a person is going through,
shedding light on ones heart; as lotus blooms it comes to represent a person
opening up to all that is around them.

  1. I love these lines, Sanaa:
‘hovers back and forth, as though
    pulling aside a memory’.

One of the most satisfying things of summer is to witness dragonflies dart about with such great intent, hovering then darting off at an angle ever mindful that predators may be around. If only we would look at other species more and learn from them as you suggest in your lovely poem Sanaa; but sadly we are so vain!

  3. How wonderfully inspired you were by this prompt, to such a beautiful and personal vision.

  4. This is so beautiful.
    “Water nymph, lend me wisdom
of change and light, lest tradition
crops my wings and sets me aside.”

Change is necessary and will happen whether we want it or not. I love how your poem reads like a psalm. You are the seeker, willing and open to search mind and soul and become what you need, hope to be.

Thank you so much for sharing about the lotus, and thank you for writing for the prompt.

  26. Colin Lee says:

“We touch destiny without going / too deep, feeding on hope and / slipping by obsidian sky.” This stanza has it, Sanaa. The magical merging of perspectives from the poet-observer with that of the dragonflies dipping the water; not only that, but the metaphor perfectly sums up how in the limited days of our lives we’re merely slipping by the “obsidian” sky. Wonderful work.
