We Fell Without Falling

It began with a look
that bent the air between us,
made the walls lean closer
as though they wanted to hear.

Your mouth was a tide
I could not resist,
and when it reached me,
it left salt on my skin
like a memory
I could taste for days.

We moved as though gravity
had been rewrittenโ€”
no descent,
only the slow pull
of two bodies tracing
the quiet constellations of each other.

The night pressed its weight against the glass,
watching,
and still we did not break.
You held my face in your hands
like it was both fragile and dangerous,
and I was neither afraid
nor willing to be saved.

We fell without fallingโ€”
into a place with no floor,
no ceiling,
only the ache of staying close
and the dark
breathing with us.

“The night pressed its weight against the glass”

Lovely poem,. Sanaa. And the above line stands out. One of those lines that pins a poem down and sticks in the head.

Splendid poetry, so many phrases to love… the tide metaphor worked especially well for me.

  3. Such a beautiful poem, Sanaa, and so hard to choose lines that stand out, but I particularly love: the idea of a look that bends the air, a mouth as a tide, and these stunning lines:
    โ€˜We moved as though gravity
    had been rewrittenโ€”
    no descent,
    only the slow pull
    of two bodies tracing
the quiet constellations of each otherโ€™.

  4. you have a lovely way with simile and metaphor and the more unusual you save for romance

I am a sucker for love poems. The imagery you use with your words is fantastically brilliant. I love these lines you wrote:

    “Your mouth was a tide
    I could not resist,
    and when it reached me,
it left salt on my skin
    like a memory
    I could taste for days.”

Made me feel happy because this is how I feel with my wife and I. Sending you a million blessings my friend. ๐Ÿ™‚

The fearlessness of lovers is so reckless and abandoned to the waking world — the courage to burn all the way down for Eros. Your poem is tinder drenched in gasoline waiting for the next kiss.
