Untitled (a poet’s daydream)

I gaze away at yonder in the arms of sunset,
sighing deeply as hour passes by indifferent
there’s a voice calling from back of my mind
like an ocean whispering to a pearly shore.

(Perhaps there is a chance I am dreaming)

I fear not love nor pause to plunge in depths
often incense of a rose’s embedded in pages
there’s a voice calling from back of my mind
like a ship sailing apart from restless wind.

(Perhaps there is a chance I am dreaming)

This city is a silhouette, mirroring the dark
as memory hushed away, sealed in the past
there’s a voice calling from back of my mind
like the sun creeping through pewter skies.

(Perhaps there is a chance I am dreaming)

You did well, Sanaa, in placing the setting of your poem in the depths of the writer’s mind. The voice calling from the back of the mind was,so real, as if there physically was such a place.

Poets must be able to dream this way and then their words come alive. I loved each of the fourth lines in each verse.

  3. Jae Rose says:

I love the use of refrain in this poem – as ever you excel

  4. Reading this lulled me into a daydream of my own….so peaceful! Loved it.

  5. Kerry says:

there’s a voice calling from back of my mind
like a ship sailing apart from restless wind.

I LOVE this image.. and the chance that it is all a dream.

(Perhaps there is a chance I am dreaming)…I love the fourth stanza and then, it all may be a dream – or not. I truly enjoyed this inside the mind of….poem.

  7. Timoteo says:

I would say it’s a hundred percent chance πŸ™‚ Nicely done!

  8. I like the echo of the refrain, doubly tentative because of the brackets, almost with your finger to your lips, Sanaa. I also love the lines:
‘there’s a voice calling from back of my mind
like a ship sailing apart from restless wind’
    and.
‘like the sun creeping through pewter skies’.

  9. Very imaginative composition. It takes us someplace. (is it a dream…)

  10. Perhaps we are all dreaming. πŸ™‚

    Interesting use of the refrain….

The repetition makes it very effective

  13. Dreaming and living can look almost the same when they dance in the mind of a poet… and sometimes, they just are. Love the refrain and the thought…

  14. Ah, dreams. I love your refrain. “…The sun creeping through pewter skies…”. Beautiful line!

  15. Sara McNulty says:

That refrain is haunting! I love this poem, Sanaa.

Sunsets can be so alluring as to make us question reality. Such an awesome write.

Yes, this is a beautiful poem and I particularly liked “there’s a voice calling from back of my mind like an ocean whispering to a pearly shore”. One of my delights is to walk along a deserted beach and just let the sea talk to me.
