Should the thought of whispering sweet nothings to me
cross your mind;
the mirror in its naivety
reveal hidden scars,
then know that I am only as far away
as you’d like me to be.
You say familiarity breathes,
stretches its limbs out under the sky
and gives longing its crimson hue which autumn
otherwise denies,
how is it that you understand what’s behind my eyes
so easily?
I am aware of the thin line that exists between love
and lust, of darkness that melds with desire
every now and then—
these hands, slender and long caressing the edges,
have the softest blush
I have ever seen, though ebony the night discern fully
when something has changed,
I cannot decide whether it is clairvoyance
or destiny but I am certain it’s you.
Be it vicissitudes of emotion, of geography, of climate,
or human existence,
know that you are forevermore in my blood—
with a potent kiss,
come read odes composed in distant past,
come remove debris by breathtaking sense of you,
these hands, sincere
in their intentions make me feel things I won’t regret,
indulging in flavor poetic—
there’s nothing temporary about the way they explore
every inch, every contour,
no choreographed confusion of forcemeat
or real farce
only knowingness, aren’t they too
a medium through which faith is illustrated?
Don’t they rush as waves tempestuous?
You say familiarity breathes,
I know it, even if the universe suffers total reversal
of space, time and their contents.

Poem inspired by the poetic masterpiece “California No” by Rae Gouirand.
As Lillian called you,”the Queen of Romance”. Your ability to find fresh words and phrases, week after week, is an incredible feat in itself. What I miss, and search for is a mature love, when the shininess wears off. But as Bjorn said,”Your poetry reveals so much about you.”
Glenn, you expressed exactly where I was going to go. This, and all of Sanaa’s work, takes words that we recognize and make us see them differently, as poetry must.
Thank you so much, Alexandra 😀 so glad you liked it 💄❤️
Thank you so much, Glenn 😀 so glad you enjoyed it 💄❤️
Was very nice hearing this read, some lines that transcend any notions of ‘romance,’ such as the mirror…to be honest, your poetry is spellbinding, and not flimsy in the least (despite a comment you might have made live!). It will stand the test of time, yes, but I think will probably go further than that, a bit like bottled wine does.
Thank you so much, Ain 😀 so glad the poem resonated with you 💄❤️
“the thin line that exists between love and lust”
I can attest to the fact that both simultaneously is wonderful
Thank you so much, Ron 😀 so good to see you 💄❤️
And Sappho blushed.

“clairvoyance or destiny”–maybe both I think…
Thank you so much, Kerfe 😀 so glad the poem resonated with you 💄❤️
I was floating reading each verse here, I caress the edges of each word you write and I will cling to the beauty within even when the universe tries to pry them from my dying hands. (I am so inspired I may need to go finish the webnovel now) 😍
Yayyy! Thank you so much, Tricia 😀 so glad you enjoyed it 💄❤️
I am only as far away
as you’d like me to be
I may have to steal this.

“You say familiarity breathes”: There is a splendor in these words that, in its repetition, only gathers force. Your voice in your love poetry is uniquely and cleverly your own, Sanaa: fresh in its imaginative appeal in all the best ways.
