Petals in the Mouth

I dream of speaking, but every word is softened—
slipping from my tongue
like blossoms,
fragile and fragrant,
too delicate to stay whole.

Your name arrives first, unfolding slowly,
its syllables blooming
against my lips— I let it rest there,
they taste of autumn rain
and something I cannot hold.

The night gathers around us, and every breath
feels shared—

a hush, where even shadows
seem to wait,
where time leans closer,
listening for language
we almost dare to speak.

Eyes as deep as twilight rivers, and a mouth
curved in half-smiles

that undo me without touch,
and oh, the line of the jaw,
so sharp and yet softened by the dim light,
it is an image
I forever keep on returning to.

And so, I wait with petals resting on tongue,
with words folded into silence,
hoping one day
they will bloom between us—
not as ache,
but as sweetness of a kiss finally spoken.

Dream speech comes to us strangely familiar, a perfect tongue forgotten long ago and lost on waking. What else is yearning wading out into love? And so we ever wait.
