Exclamation comes in bunches

It bows and cries out in submission;
like sundaes overwhelm the lips unassuming,
a sharp turn,
sudden gust of wind and touchβ€”
shall I befuddle it with a smile,
offer tattered senses and crackers so that depth of feeling
is manageable,
shall I wield my tongue accordingly,
taste outburst as highly seasoned as cinnamon,
as anise?

Exclamation comes in bunches, selfishly,
strewn with echoes of yesterday marks me as his,
electrons, garlic cloves,
celery, batteries, balloons and eggs
provide but little consolationβ€”
shall I strap on some armor,
compose a manifesto in curt reply to punches and blows,
like half moon,
scarlet blushing skin and Monday blues;
we duel powered by surge of adrenaline listening
to evening’s song.

    ‘shall I wield my tongue accordingly,
    taste outburst as highly seasoned as cinnamon,
    as anise?’

    – this is a poetic ‘Saltimbocca,’ Sanaa (an Italian dish which literally ‘jumps in the mouth!’ A mesmerising take on the prompt ❀️

  3. Bjorn Rudberg says:

    Oh you need a manifesto in response to those punches…

    Those punches… so much bruising

    • Sanaa says:

      Thank you so much, Bjorn πŸ˜€ so glad the poem resonated with you πŸ’„β€οΈ

      (and thank you for the glorious prompt) 🌹

    En guard! So rich, so much going on in here. I’m reminded of the 9-volt battery, and the shock it gave on the tongue. And the crackers make it.

  5. Very beautifully written Sanaa. The spice of exclamation is always stinging for the good taste or the bad!

  6. Grace says:

    I love the passionate voice. That manfesto comes with a punch:

    You could befuddle anyone or anything with a smile … a magnificent poem!

  9. Decadent verses! Loved this, “shall I strap on some armor, compose a manifesto in curt reply to punches and blows, like half moon” I think sometimes we all hold back part of ourselves in fear, like the half moon, a great metaphor! πŸŒœπŸ’“πŸŒ›

    Sanaa,
    How this made my heart ache: “shall I befuddle it with a smile,/offer tattered senses and crackers so/that depth of feeling /is manageable” — You have put into words the bruises and unmanageability of love battling in voiceless pain.
