After a reading of “Lady Lazarus.”

A puff of powder, a dab of lipstick
and sprinkle
of ozone-friendly aerosol to keep my hair subdued,
there is little that hasn’t been said
about what goes on
inside
a Poet’s head; one suspects a double death,
for outside
even the sourwood blushes.

Brilliant… love the way you refer back to the poet (and I had to read Lady Lazarus also)… thank you for that.

(and thank you for the glorious prompt) 🌹

  3. Sanaa- So much meaning in only 44 words- superb!

  4. Brilliant, Sanaa! I love the portrait of the image-conscious Poet, the internal rhyming of β€˜said’ and ’head’, the hint at dark dealings, and those β€˜sourwood blushes’.

  5. Ingrid says:

This is perfectly formed and a beautiful homage to Plath’s poem, Sanaa! You have given me two memorable final lines to take away tonight!

  6. Well done, Sanaa! Great imagery and final lines. A wonderful homage to Plath, even though her poem makes me squirm with its allusions.

  7. Misky says:

The image works perfectly with this steamy poem!

  8. Had to look up sourwood; thanks. You put a lot of thought into this quadrille. Plath is showing up often in our group.

  9. Laudable work, Sanaa. Sylvia would love it, I think.

  10. So true of the poet’s head! It encouraged a visit to Plath. Thank you.

  11. Wow, Sanaa, that was such a twist – well done!

This phrase made me go back and reread the whole thing all over again:

    inside a Poet’s head

    All best,
    David

Great poem Sanaa! I love the painting and the feel of that as you weave your blushing words through the mind of the poet!

  16. Ooh I really like this piece. Well written.

  17. Nicely done, Sanaa! <3

  18. One must always subdue the hair! I do feel like she’s repressing more here though. Something bubbling below the surface, fascinating! 😍

    Lovely!

  20. Lillian says:

Wonderful tribute to Plath! The image is quite amazing and the words complement it so very well. I’m wondering….did you do the write first and then find the image? Or find the image first and then, motivated by it, wrote this delicious piece?

    • Sanaa says:

Thank you so much, Lillian πŸ˜€ so glad you liked it πŸ’„β€οΈ

(I write first and then look for a suitable image) πŸ™‚
