The gravity of a single note

The evening gathers slowly at the pane,
as if the dark were learning how to grieve;
one note rises, trembling through the rain,
and asks the heart what it cannot believe.

The silence follows–faithful as a prayer–
then breaks against the ceiling, white with pain,
I hear your absence breathing in the air,
a wound that keeps unfolding like a vein.

And higher still the music dares to climb,
until it seems the heavens cannot bear,
the weight of all we have surrendered here–
our vanished hours, our bodies, and our time.

Then everything falls quiet. Even light
kneels at the threshold of the coming night.

    Much love

  3. Oh, Sanaa, this is a stunning sonnet. I love the way it speeds up and slows down, the evening gathering ‘slowly at the pane, as if the dark were learning how to grieve’, and then the one note ‘trembling through the rain’.
    And the way it comes full circle with the rhyming couplet!
