Petrichor

If you recall, we have met before;
somewhere between brittle earth etched
with longing
and pretty words serving as disguise
the minute the sky darkens,
everything that takes place feels as though
it’s unexpected,
that is, until earthiness emanates and enthralls
the mind, allow me to introduce myself,
I have had dreams where I have spoken to you
till 4 am in the morning,
like fragrance of rain that stays after downpour,
the name is Petrichor.

The only storm I chase is you;
sifting virtue and sin in a paper cup while the world
passes judgment,
I seize the dark of you,
the vanishing drought, the undeniable mauve
of thoughts,
I confess, I hold my breath when you
decide to go rogue,
the intense, fevered howls are better
than musk and rose,
are haunting in ways I cannot explain,
I am petrichor,
stylishly moody and vulnerable, but oh!
I am nothing in comparison to the wayward emotions
you emote,
the allure of you is strong
but you never stay long enough for me
to appreciate,
I love the manner in which your being
encases mine, where does your skin begin?
Where does my scent end?

If you ask me, we are similar in more ways
than one,
are forever entwined— that being said,
it is a pity that the time we share is short,
as honeysuckle and wisteria
stretch across with patches
of blue showing through light susurration,
I am petrichor, both concrete and grass,
I am aware of what it means to let go;
I come with a souvenir ache.

And now, the primal instinct of earth beckons;
it’s time for me to roam,
to sing harmonious ballads elsewhere,
you are the calm,
I am the chaos in between,
I am aware of the pounding in your heart
that craves an everlasting escape–
if only, I could describe your lips,
bowl-shaped with a hint of poignancy
around the border,

as though returning to water, perhaps
this is what it’s like to sing after a kiss,

I am petrichor, but the need to be felt
in every way imaginable is yours.
What a lovely sophism to end this poem with.

Kim hosts at dVerse where she invites us to write and offers a
list of words. I chose to anthropomorphise the word “Petrichor.” 💙

  1. Ah, Sanaa, I love your anthropomorphised petrichor, and how your first line rhymes with your title word! There is so much to praise in this poem. I especially enjoyed the lines:

    ‘somewhere between brittle earth etched
    with longing
    and pretty words serving as disguise
    the minute the sky darkens’;

    ‘I seize the dark of you,
    the vanishing drought, the undeniable mauve
    of thoughts’;

    and

    ‘it’s time for me to roam,
    to sing harmonious ballads elsewhere,
    you are the calm,
    I am the chaos in between’.

    You are a hard act to follow!

    • Sanaa says:

      Awww gosh! Thank you so much, Kim 😀 so glad you enjoyed it! 💄💙

      (and thank you for the glorious prompt) 🥂

  2. Björn says:

    What an excellent poem and so much to love (I will not copy the whole poem here) ,,, but just this one
    The only storm I chase is you;
    such a great way to capture the way summer rain works to invoke almost suppressed passion.

    • Sanaa says:

      Thank you so much, Bjorn 😀 we are headed towards monsoon here, so glad the poem resonated with you! 💄💙

  3. Never has Petrichor been so sensuous Sanaa- in the language to the addressee you have rained down a wonderful storm of imagery right up to that last stanza
    “the primal instinct of earth beckons;
    it’s time for me to roam,
    to sing harmonious ballads elsewhere, “

  4. msjadeli says:

    The yearning is keen here and it is noteworthy that petrichor does not exist without its beloved storms.

  5. AJ (Ange) says:

    Beautiful imagery I love your poem 💞

  6. dwight l. roth says:

    Your enchanting love poems are always wonderful and as refreshing as a summer rain on a tin roof!

  7. “where does your skin begin?
    Where does my scent end?”

    “I am aware of what it means to let go;
    I come with a souvenir ache.”

    “the undeniable mauve ”
    I never would have thought to personalize petrichor. Well done!!!

    Much💜love

  9. Dawn says:

  10. Eric Erb says:

    This poem fills my nose
    And has me
    And hides my words from me
    And reveals the vast central plains
    What new scent will arise
    After that reign?

  11. I confess, I hold my breath when you
    decide to go rogue,
    the intense, fevered howls are better
    than musk and rose,
    are haunting in ways I cannot explain,
    I am petrichor,

    You are such an incredibly talented poet, Sanaa. I am humbled to read your words.

  12. “What a lovely sophism to end this poem with.”

    !!!

    I like the idea of being able to detach and laugh at passion.

  13. Sara McNulty says:

    So much longing in this amazing poem, Sanaa. Every line stuns with its beauty.
    I’ll just pick one:

    “The only storm I chase is you;
    sifting virtue and sin in a paper cup while the world
    passes judgment,
    I seize the dark of you,
    the vanishing drought, the undeniable mauve
    of thoughts, “
