The Human Seasons

Lusty, the time of youth when silence is song,
song is silence– it’s inseparable
and consciousness is as bold as brass;
who cares to think then about autumn?
Its season alternating hot days and cool nights.

Teasingly, summer arrives clad in strawberry-red
development,
and twilight
faces death
by a thousand conversations;
who thinks then to prepare for winter?
Its moral raising its head late in the year.

To culminate, human seasons are as continuum
they carry on, maturing over the decades;
I adore the positioning of the atoms of time
they know
it’s against our nature to let things by
as waterβ€”
but we step aside when they reach the brimming edge.

  1. Winter seems so far away when the soul is full of spring. I wonder how much easier–and pleasurable–life would be, if we truly kept in mine that now is foundation for tomorrow.

    Great I Love: twilight
    faces death by a thousand conversations
    I love the different seasons Here it is autumn at the moment which is usually quite pleasant.

    Love the last line….

  5. You’ve taken a classic romantic title by Keats and created a poem that is very much you, Sanaa, taking us through the seasons. These lines stood out for me:
    β€˜I adore the positioning of the atoms of time
    they know
    it’s against our nature to let things by
    as waterβ€”
    but we step aside when they reach the brimming edge.’

  6. Loved this. Time, cycles, seasons, all dealt with in a mystical kind of way.

  7. Kerry says:

    I adore the positioning of the atoms of time
    they know
    it’s against our nature to let things by…

    These lines are a brilliant conclusion to the piece. Another amazing poem from your pen.

  8. Old Egg says:

    What a great poem Sanaa. The young are lucky for there is something good about every season but as I get older seasons offer little except to take me into cold winters hands.

  9. lillian says:

    Oh so beautiful, again! Your writing just enthralls me. Being in my 7th decade, and having just recently celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary, I can say there is still joy and passion in our wintering season. One should not fear it at all πŸ™‚

  10. Ellecee says:

    What a lovely ode to the seasons and to our time cycles through,

  11. Chrissa says:

    A lovely poem the ending of which gave me shivers.

  12. This is brilliant and beautiful, Sanaa! The “atoms of time” and “death by a thousand conversations”, just two of a solid continuum of wonderful moments.

    Memories of a well-lived spring can keep us warmer in the wintertime.

  15. Wendy Bourke says:

    Very profound. Time: the pages and passages and cycles that life moves through – and we mortals along with it. One cannot help the mind moving in such a direction as we all mark the days to the other side of this pandemic.

  16. The seasons of time in where we are and where we want to be. With spring here, we are planting in hopes of fall harvest and summer’s bounty. Thank you, Sanaa for this and sending a dose of Keats our way – Cheers.

  17. dsnake1 says:

    lovely poem!
    oh, how wonderful the time of youth!

  18. Bev Crawford says:

    A lovely comparison of seasons of nature to the seasons of our lives, reminiscent of the Bible verse “To everything there is a season”. Good write!

  19. I like this concept; nature of time and human seasons. It is profound and beautifully rendered. Usually when spring arrives in the northern hemisphere, I re-enter that time of youth. But now with the current pandemic that joy is somewhat delayed.

  20. The flow of nature, our place and encouragement in it is so beautifully expressed your poem.

  21. Time is so many different things to so many different people. I’m glad to read your take on it.

  22. Baishali says:

    Time, cycle, seasons … a fascinating write! Loved “but we step aside when they reach the brimming edge.”
