Storm Moon ~ Part Two: When at long last Eurydice woke

There are no roses in the underworld
nor gravel
to keep one from falling
only shadows–
it twists and turns and at once catches fire,
the brooding sun
watching from the other end,
how can it be that I am no longer afraid?
Is it because nothing has happened,
soft lips
untouched, unopened like pink fruit,
its tiny black seeds of explosion
with a flavor
so sensual so as to tempt
even Hades
in the realm of the dead; from his fingers
I am hail,

concentric layers of silver, seething ice
from where nothingness remains–
whatever hope that once existed now serves
to be faint;

I watch as you pace round and
round the colonnade

eating dust;
you cover our briefness together in song.

  1. So beautiful!
(It would be good to have a link to Part One.)

  2. I enjoyed your take on Greek mythology, Sanaa, and was completely taken by: β€˜There are no roses in the underworld’ and the lines:
β€˜Is it because nothing has happened,
    soft lips
    untouched, unopened like pink fruit’
    and
    β€˜I am hail,
concentric layers of silver, seething ice
    from where nothingness remains’.

  3. Old Egg says:

I loved reading Greek mythology from many years back and was quite fascinated with it even writing my own interpretations of minor gods and goddesses lives. I really loved your take on it as well!

  4. Beautifully done. I also enjoy Greek myths, and you even gave a nod to Dante.

  5. Anna :o] says:

Your words are sublime Sanaa and I HAD to read over and over as I didn’t want to let go.
Thanks for the link to Part One which I enjoyed equally.

  6. Chrissa says:

This was amazing! Visceral in the mostly untouchable world of shadows is a feat.

  7. gillena says:

I had been an avid reader of greek tales in the past. Your poem rekindled that love
Happy you dropped by my sumie Sunday today

    Lordy, woman. That is gorgeous!

  9. Baishali says:

    So well written. Wow!

  10. And the song changes everything!

  11. “no roses in the underworld”, hope that becomes faint – more sadness that seeks a respite in this world, perhaps?

  12. Helen says:

An awesome write, Sanaa …. immediately triggered memories of falling on gravel in my childhood. Large pieces of it which hurt! Once again, the art accompanying your piece is fascinating.

  13. Barry says:

There is an undercurrent of dread and longing in this poem that resonates with me. You have a talent for weaving sensual imagery into tangibility, creating a seductive, dreamlike vibe.

  14. ZQ says:

    Another beautiful piece.

  15. Wendy Bourke says:

Loved the direction you went in with this … striking on wonderful epic mythological notes, throughout . Very creative … beautifully rendered.

  16. So deep, like the underworld, like a dark fairy tale.

  17. Rommy says:

The lush images tantalizing through the shadows but forever beyond human touch add the right note of despair.

  18. The last line of this piece reads like a poem in itself. I can see a whole story brewing out of the idea of someone making each kiss, each touch, each glance an epic romance that lasts forever in song.

  19. Jim says:

I enjoyed reading here, Sanaa , I’m ready to read the entire collection when it’s bound.
I’m about ready for another of Terry’s wordlists. My effort was
immemorable, but you read my February 2 effort with it. Definitely not book worthy.
