At times bitter, at times sweet ~ this living

It’s going to be a roller coaster.

It’s going to change the way you feel
and think for the better in the end.

It’s going to happen sometime early
next month.

It’s going to cross your mind once a year
while you are running errands,
try not to think of that sad time,
instead blink away dark memories
and delight in the way the snow glistens.

It’s going to ruin your concept of love just
when you are getting comfortable,
for the entire world to see, but fret not—
it’s just one of those
life lessons that make one stronger.

It’s going to take your breath away, much like
rose-gold explosions in Spring
when bud and foliage are at their peak—
be prepared,
to embrace, the change that follows.

It’s going to be close: to secure election a
candidate must
at the first voting poll an absolute majority
and a number of votes equal
to one-fourth of the number of electors.

It’s going to melt your heart, when the frosting
you so endearingly put on the cake
to decorate
will be appreciated by the relatives,
cherish every bit of it.

It’s going to be a long day tomorrow, and an
even longer night.

It’s going to bring you out of your comfort zone,
but then again, it’s a price
one pays if he wishes to move forward.

It’s going to lead you to writing better poetry,
circumstances just do,
it’s how the universe makes sure
we blossom, with a silken burst of sound.

It’s going to happen at the end of this year.

It’s going to fill you with rapture, it’s going
to redefine happiness.

It’s going to take place on New Year’s Eve,
in front of the postman,
while you are receiving the parcel
sent for your mother.

It’s going to make you cry and laugh at the
same time.

It’s going to belong to you like nothing ever
has before.

  1. Björn says:

I hope there will be some brightness in all the darkness to come, but I fear the coming weeks.
    The contrasts are very effeective

  2. Ain Starlingsson says:

A heartfelt verse, and so readable in it’s relevancy. I like the tone very much, and undertones, as we switch scenes. V good piece.

  3. Dora says:

This blew me away, Sanaa, this amalgamation of paradoxical feelings and events yet to be, yet past, and the rich imagery of lines like, “It’s going to take your breath away, much like
    rose-gold explosions in Spring
when bud and foliage are at their peak—” and
“It’s going to lead you to writing better poetry,
    circumstances just do,
it’s how the universe makes sure
we blossom, with a silken burst of sound.”

Masterful use of repetition, beautifully done.

  4. This is a different direction for you, Sanaa, and it’s very effective, especially the direct address. I really like the suggestion to ‘blink away dark memories and delight in the way the snow glistens’, and the lines:
‘It’s going to take your breath away, much like
    rose-gold explosions in Spring
when bud and foliage are at their peak’.

  5. Grace says:

Love the repetition of (It’s going to ..) like an anticipation of what is going to happen. I hope for brighter things to come, despite the problems with elections and challenges we face. We all write better poetry because of these for sure.

  6. Ken Gierke says:

Seek the positive. Find it. Make it your own.

  7. My favourite lines are the same as Kim’s, and my admiration is huge for your bittersweet writing that still stays buoyant and hopeful for the burgeoning of unexpected joy.
    Blessings to you x

  8. Amber Tamblyn is a favorite of mine. I have her book Bang Ditto.

  9. Wonderful Sanaa! Life really is a roller-coaster isn’t it? All our hopes and expectations will either bring us joy or tears. We must face them all fearlessly. 🥰

  10. msjadeli says:

Sanaa this really sounds like marketing to me, and if it is something positive, I will buy it.

  11. The repetition of “it’s going to” is so effective–
and that is life, isn’t it? The moments that
“take your breath away, much like
    rose-gold explosions in Spring”

    and
“It’s going to ruin your concept of love just
    when you are getting comfortable,
for the entire world to see, but fret not—
    it’s just one of those
life lessons that make one stronger.”

    Beautifully done, Sanaa! 💙

  12. Helen says:

Your entire poem is a wonderful ride of roller coaster predictions! I love where you took us and I do mean took! Let us know what the end of 2024 brings, please.

  13. You write so much positive, passionate poetry of the soul, Sanaa, that the sadness mixed with resolve to be strong in this poem is triply poignant…

  14. Brendan says:

Here’s to a case of It to suffice for life’s betters and bitters. Spot on for the challenge.

  15. ren says:

the ending was my personal fave:
“It’s going to make you cry and laugh at the
    same time.

It’s going to belong to you like nothing ever
    has before.”

and i loved it so much, i read it three times.

  16. Nolcha Fox says:

I enjoyed your poem – good use of mantra!
