Autumn, settles itself over my skin

Part of what I love about this season is
gardens that adjoin it,
a hidden, sunlit nook surrounded by mature
sycamore trees,

shades of gold and amber as skies
fill themselves with shadows—
Autumn, settles itself over my skin and
speaks
of a certain converging, an exhilarating
birth worthy of note.

Its mornings are nothing short of poetry,
the moon dresses in a misty cloak
while leaves twirl and dance,
the wind
whispers melodies and lovers
estranged look forward to meeting
once again,
Autumn though wise in its celestial
crescendo and
rustling euphony of coppery tales
is young at heart,
not many people are aware of this.

I haven’t yet met with a person who hasn’t
fallen for golden haze
and brightly adorned lakes,
gloriously beautiful to look upon,
it is a time when the heart is ready for
new beginnings and hope
can be found amidst the auburn leaves,
I, for one, enjoy the view
around red-brick shops and crisp, cool
breeze— life has a way of continuing.

The season with its restlessness marks
the end of a sultry summer,
I observe the way broad shoulders sway
gracefully with each step,
as I stride to the corral, the weight of time
pulls and soon
a gust of uncontrollable enthusiasm
knocks me down on the grass.
“It’s hard to understand who is more
enamored, the wind
makes my dress move as if it’s alive.”
Wearing yellow is a Poet’s way
of flirting with Autumn.

I love the thought of flirting with fall. Though it is getting a bit dark now.

  2. A beautiful title, Sanaa, and I love all the beautiful things about autumn in your poem: the ‘shades of gold and amber as skies / fill themselves with shadows’; the moon dressed in a misty cloak; and autumn’s ‘celestial crescendo and / rustling euphony of coppery tales’. Like Björn, I love the flirtatiousness.

Dazzled by this….the title, picture, and then…the words, the hertfelt words….such a beautiful verse, full of secrets, like the special new fact, that autumn is in reality young at heart…so clever…wonderful verse

    – As Rilke said in his 10th elegy,

And we, who have always thought
of happiness as rising, would feel
the emotion that almost overwhelms us
    whenever a happy thing falls.

Sanaa – a tour de force. I quite admire how your poetic voice continues to evolve and grow ~

  11. “when nature takes a breath.” yes and in that breath what joy the poet feels, so observant, so in love with the sights and sounds she dons yellow!

  12. Helen says:

Yes, only you would characterize summer as sultry, as if it were alive ~ how it would make your dress move as if it were alive ~ how wearing yellow is a Poet’s way of flirting with Autumn!!! Only you.

  13. This poet, flirting or otherwise, has distilled the essence of Autumn – bravo Sanaa…
