Merciles Beaute (“Merciless Beauty”)

He drips himself with water, his shoulders
squaring in front of a window full of light,
one would think
he is preparing for battle,
given his stance, but oh,
only the sun knows of heat that emanates,
smooth-skinned,
with a jawline sharp enough to slice the wind,
pray tell me, then
how you expect me to dodge?

His eyes slay me without apology,
their beauty I cannot sustain,
lips, slightly parted, gage, breathing in chaos
I wonder,
which era of night discerns fire that erupts,
you see, I am consumed,
neither grass nor sand subdue,
and now,
eros whispers until the full moon rises overnight.

In all honesty, I confess that dark mane
holds me captive
and ushers reason out the door,
I am a Poet, but words upon his gaze
fall short— his eyes slay me
without apology,
without a trace of remorse,
perfectly hued to match intensity.
Every reader’s exegesis will be different,
but if you add a line or three,
you will consider your time here well spent.

Oh this just sizzles in sensuality…….

    Endearing, exotic, wonderfully done.

  2. Björn says:

This is a wonderful introduction how we all sometimes fall victim to that merciless beauty in eyes, hair and the electric gaze. So passionate.

  3. phew- this is a hot one but then your prompt is a perfect vehicle for your sensual writing Sanaa

    “holds me captive
and ushers reason out the door, ”

    spot on with that!

  4. msjadeli says:

Oh yeah, “…he’s got Bette Davis eyes.”

  5. What an opening image, Sanaa, so sensual and cinematographic:
‘He drips himself with water, his shoulders
squaring in front of a window full of light’,
which reminds me of Mr Darcy in the lake in the film version of Pride and Prejudice.
So many wonderful phrases in your poem, such as ‘a jawline sharp enough to slice the wind’, and ‘his eyes slay me…perfectly hued to match intensity’.

  6. So sensuous and passionate, Sanaa.
“eros whispers until the full moon rises overnight” 💙

The title made me think of Keats, La Belle Dame Sans Merci”

Hope some day you find your way to Anne Carson’s “Eros the Bittersweet.” The assault of eros here overwhelming — loss of control is one the His hallmarks, with all the battle imagery intact. To be taken this is to be consumed by god.
