Is this how it’s going to be?

Aggression sticks to everything, being the main cause of black rain
to erupt
from the once compliant sky—
words are fetal
for even fireflies can lose their light;
a mason jar filled with never to be read notes,
is this how it’s going to be?
Is this what we are expected to endure;
black-eyed susans ripped apart in hopes of puncturing equality—
it’s no mystery
where and what the pattern is pointing to; yet I defy by breathing
soft and steady.

  1. Amazing! How wonderfully inspired you were by this image.

  2. Wow, Sanaa, the image you chose has brought out another side of you! I especially love the lines:
    ‘…words are fetal
    for even fireflies can lose their light’
    and
    ‘black-eyed susans ripped apart in hopes of puncturing equality’.
    The ending ‘soft and steady’ is a relief.

    I adore the picture you chose, and the ekphrastic elements are very well drawn throughout. Another excellent poem in April.

  4. Ellecee says:

    “yet I defy by breathing
    soft and steady.” We hope that more of us can defy the acts of aggression done thoughtlessly🙏

    Picture and words swirl together, and Mystery is served up very well, very personally here, in many shades and moods.

    Ah….we chose the same painting. Interesting how different our interpretations are….art is in the eye of the beholder indeed.
    I love your take on this and most especially these words:
    “for even fireflies can lose their light;
    a mason jar filled with never to be read notes,
    is this how it’s going to be?”
    I find this statement and this question stunning and so engaging.

  7. “black-eyed susans ripped apart in hopes of puncturing equality—” Wow! So love what you pulled from the image.

    Sanaa, you got me into sync here with black rain. More unknowns would be coming, think tank caliber ideas.
    And they did. Nice writing, clever.
