I do not consume wine nor sing
of saccharine promises that coat the tongue,
candy apple inebriation
that pokes its head
from every nook and cranny,
but I do write of it,
make notes and compare its taste
to that of a lover’s lips,
they are pretty similar when you come to
think of it.
I do not yearn for wine nor gaze
upon clouds in hopes of learning different nuances,
there is so much more than meets the eye.
Made with black grapes,
rose evokes a quiet desire that tosses
and turns with the tide,
then we have sauvignon blanc,
which wrings open the ribcage as fable and makes
everything seem lighter,
but personally, I love champagne
and would drink a glass or two, for it speaks to me
of Sahara roses, bouquet of certain words and moonlight.
Who can possibly refuse such a thing.
No, I do not know of wine nor claim to be
knowledgeable, but humor me this,
wouldn’t it be nice to create a definition of our own?
Riesling, fruity and floral,
seeking to preserve feeling between the pages,
being led by strange wishes,
and then comes chardonnay,
the most popular white wine in the world,
its lyrics are etched permanently inside one’s head.
I am devastated, but that’s not for you to see,
come find me in the echo of merlot,
soft with notes of black fruits, chocolate
and a touch of spice,
somewhat like a Petrarchan sonnet,
tempestuous waves and the edge of night,
and I will cherish you as paper does ink.
Mojitos while hanging with mates,
gin when you are lonesome;
I do not consume wine nor sing
of saccharine promises that coat the tongue.

Punam is our lovely hostess at dVerse where she invites us to write a poem
inspired by wine. Come join us! ❤
Love all the different metaphors you could do with all the different grapes.
Thank you so much, Bjorn 😀 so glad the poem and its imagery appealed to you 💄❤️
Nicely done, Sanaa! I don’t drink either, maybe once or twice a year, and I definitely do not ‘sing of saccharine promises that coat the tongue’ and I avoid ‘candy apple inebriation’. But I enjoy your poems that make reference to it and ‘compare its taste to that of a lover’s lips’. My favourite lines:
‘come find me in the echo of merlot,
soft with notes of black fruits, chocolate
and a touch of spice,
somewhat like a Petrarchan sonnet,
tempestuous waves and the edge of night’.
Thank you so much, my dearest Kim 😀 so glad you enjoyed it 💄❤️
a beautiful rendition Sanaa – sober but not sobering
“and I will cherish you as paper does ink—
I do not consume wine nor sing
of saccharine promises that coat the tongue.”
Thank you so much, Laura 😀 so glad the poem resonated with you 💄❤️
What a beautiful ode to wine by a non drinker! Sanaa, only you could have brought out all the underlying notes and etch them so evocatively. Thanks so much for writing this beautiful verse. 💖💖

Absolutely delicious! I am especially smitten with these words:
“but I do write of it,
make notes and compare its taste
to that of a lover’s lips,
they are pretty similar when you come to
think of it.”
