They say the world will end in fire;
But what if destruction – reeks of ice
To this alone my thoughts aspire.
Several are those who worship – inquire
And shall be judged like all the rest.
They say the world will end in fire.
His favor leaves us nothing to require;
Good actions alone in the end will save.
To this alone my thoughts aspire.
For those who sin – results are dire;
None shall come to take the blame.
They say the world will end in fire.
Like saints that at the stake expire;
No guilt in life or fear in death.
To this alone my thoughts aspire.
There is a Voice whose tones inspire;
Enlarge the close – contracted mind.
They say the world will end in fire;
To this alone my thoughts aspire.

Inspiration from the title of Robert Frost’s poem “Fire and Ice.”
Form: Villanelle
“Good actions alone in the end will save. / To this alone my thoughts aspire.”…these two beautiful lines kindle hope for this world torn into pieces by greed and hatred…great use of Frost’s lines here Sanaa….
Hello Sumana,

Your use of repetition is very effective…if only more people thought about their actions and consequences..the world would surely be a better…sunnier place
Hello Jae Rose,
Thanks for stopping by, so glad you liked it 😀
Highly appreciated, have a great week ahead.
I really like the progression of this poem, the way you took inspiration from the Frost poem and played with it in your own way to come up with something unique and standing well on its own.

Destruction by ice is not going to be any better than that by fire I Think.. But we are well on our way to bringing either one upon ourselves as a species.
Hello Thotpurge,

luv your tweak of the Frost poem, you made it your own.

Gosh. Your use of Frost in this Villanelle paradoxically makes me hope for wholeness–itself a kind of fire–before the end. I am sure the ice will melt and put out the fire and POOF! But the VOICE–I aspire to know that regardless.

Like saints that at the stake expire;
No guilt in life or fear in death.
Those strong in resolve would rightly be ready to face the inevitable. Nothing should limit the options!

Beautifully penned, Saana!
“They say the world will end in fire.” – such a misplaced understanding is the reason why a lot of people get stuck through this journey.

Cool, smooth villanelle. It does seem this open link night, form poetry outnumbers free verse entirely. Your Frost inspiration catapulted you to an exalted state it seems.

Sanaa, I love what you did with your villanelle and the topic of fire. I’ve found that sometimes the form can really help pull a poem out of you…don’t you think. I like these lines:
“Like saints that at the stake expire;
No guilt in life or fear in death.
To this alone my thoughts aspire.”
Hello Gayle,

Villanelles are really hard to do.. and you might wonder what is worst.. ice or fire. Actually up north, the belief has always been that it will end in ice.. well done.

The repeats drive home the point strongly – the fierce strength of your lines with Frost blended in so well.

The world – so they tell me – has ended a few times already. Humans will probably survive the fire ending too, and adapt and carry on. Hope it’s not in my lifetime though. The poem is a prayer.
Hello Petru,
Thanks for stopping by, so glad you liked it 🙂

I do love vilanelles but when I try to write one, it sounds trite and forced. Yours sounds so natural and flowing. A very nice twist to the Robert Frost poem, too.
