Desire is currant jam coupled with
just the right amount of marmalade.
Her reminiscences of younger days
when the world seemed less parlous,
reminds me of a child reaching out
in hopes of catching shooting stars.

One hundred and seventy five pounds
seems like a dream when I stand here
mourning in silence and shock as loss
draped in swathes of slate mocks me
till I’m numb in state.

Chocolate cupcakes and oh milky bars
Her eyes would shine at mere mention
of them, they say a wish comes true as
long as there’s faith.. now I pray knelt
down upon your grave; ‘May pain and
suffering color not your flame, sweep
across from the fields without calling
your name..”

Kerry asked us to select one of the works of artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres for our inspiration. This poem is written in loving memory of my cousin Hera. May she rest in peace.. Amen.
