Sunshine

Spread the love

She woke to the scent of magnolia trees; watching
as the sun bathed the hills in gentle apricot light.
Thus crossing the room towards the window sill;
she caught the dappled splotches of sun and shade
filtering through her tender palm. “I desire not rain
nor fear the onset of a storm. Lo! pour me drops of
glorious sunshine; grace to mold the maiden form.

Thus a shower of sunlight falls through the trees;
like faith light threaded through psalm. She ran
through fields brimming with hope; waving high
above to glittering calm. “Lo! red maples tread thru
haze of fire; chanting artless notes ‘neath parochial
guise. Hail to birth and death of sun; while slumber
seals thus wearied eyes.”

Tumult and peace as darkness and light;
Let instinct penetrate thus soul to sight.

    This is a lovely illustration filled with both concrete and abstract imagery – you combine the two so skillfully! i love the internal rhymes, and the repeated rhythms give this poem a hymn-like feel, or like a triumphal angel march. beautiful.

  9. She says:

    Oh, Sanaa. I could almost weep over your opening line. 🙁 Magnolias are heaven to me, and I don’t have any trees where I live now. It breaks my heart. Other people have them, down the street and such. But it’s just not the same. Honestly, no matter what’s hurting my heart, if I can hold a fresh magnolia in my hands and just bury my sadness in it, I can find healing. I like to put them on the dashboard of my car, too. That is the most beautiful scent, to me.

    Okay, back to the poem … not only is she waking to their scent, but she’s waking to their scent WATCHING her. How gorgeous is that?! And not just the trees watching her, but their *scent*. I am just swooning, big time, over that one line.

    Oh my word, and then you go and say something like “apricot light”!!! Girl, you are making me so happy right now.

    “caught the dappled splotches” … I adore that phrase.

    “tender palm” … That says it all, doesn’t it? Some of us are so very fragile, regardless of what we present.

    “glittering calm” and “red maples” … Yes please. I think that’s just what I need.

    “chanting artless notes ‘neath parochial
    guise” … This is another favorite.
