Soliloquy

Spread the love

For one that’s yet to come
I often picture
                how you would be
as blossoms swirl along the sea.

I sing the song
                of a gentle breeze,
toss ideas out to the cheering sun
               of a newborn clad
in mauve and gold,
whose eyes would melt a
                              hardened soul.

I whisper to a single
                              mockingbird,
‘oh how to soothe her flowing tears’
as pensive moon
                    shines by night.
Embroider her heart
                           with quiet dreams
as tai haku’s foliage sleeps.

Years from now when you will
have grown
              braced with a mind
that’s filled with choices,
            remember what you choose
in turn
determines your character;
let not temptation force you
         into a position you wouldn’t
normally consider.

For one that’s yet to come
I often picture
                how you would be
as blossoms swirl along the sea.

Such good advice for a daughter from a mother’s perspective, and far more gentle and loving than an authoritarian parent.

  2. Rommy says:

I remember all the hopes and dreams I had of motherhood. Reality was often stranger, but still pretty good. And I do have regular conversations about choices and consequences – thankfully those seem to be sticking pretty well! Really pretty piece Sanaa.

  3. Mary says:

Ah, I love this contemplation of one yet unborn. I think. The wonder, the imagining, the love — all felt strongly in your words.

  4. Sherry Blue Sky says:

This is such a tender beautiful poem and it made me wonder……….do you have news? Smiles. Contemplating the unborn….I remember doing that, wondering who the child would be. I, too, love the admonition about what one chooses forming one’s character. Key wisdom.

(I am single! But I do hope to get settled.. and have kids soon)
