I am often told that an elephant withstands
thru arrows shot; woeful being thus human
lot. They pay no heed to conscious thought;
their conduct mostly coarse and low. Lo! as
elephants haul from out of mud; bear thus
witness to their pride and thud.
AlthoughΒ elephants seem but wild to us;
altruism beams through flesh and blood.
Thus aim to transit lone round the world;
as an elephant bold along the forest floor.
Hence on winding lakes and rivers wide;
fare with upright pace as men of yore.
Bless their bruised deep bosom sore;
Thus lovelier in vision instead of lore.

Having trouble getting my comment to stick. Yes, the elephants are much better–for both us and them–alive and in front of us than in some storybook about the past!

We humans tend to overlook the strengths and wisdoms of animals. Elephants are a case in point or else why would poachers only see them as a treasure trove for tusk hunting.

I so love elephants and cant bear that they are poached or made to “perform” for humans. Not many safe places left for the beasties. They are extremely intelligent, feeling beings. Thanks for writing about them, Sanaa.

They are such mighty beings… and I could understand if they were used for food, it could save a village, but their tusks… so sad.

Hi Sanaa ~ I did send you a comment but it must not have posted.
Do you know where lost comments and e-mailings go? Nobody does, there a lot of answers but none agree. Think of a message in a bottle; think of those messages lost in the ether or along the wires and fiber optics cables, like a runaway train on the tracks.
Your poem was pleasant on my ears, lots of rhyming. The message came through too, elephants have the animal kingdoms woes as do others. But generally theirs are of different kinds.
On my last comment I recommended a book, “Water for Elephants”. Google that to get the gist of it. Our public library has copies, yours may as well.

Back ~~ I have a special like for elephants. I’ve blogged som about them. The king I gave for ‘website’ will show that. The first one shows the correct title and author for the book I mansion end.
