Lo! wading in a sea of lost belief; she was but lone autumnal
leaf. Caught undertow sheΒ swept thus downstream; emptied
herΒ heart of the mortal daydream. For red russet lips with all
their mournful pride; held just little hope with solemn rites
between.
She danced alongside faith with the closeness of moonbeam;
while hummingbirds whistle and chirp her triumph into the
night. “At length be mindful doe of bearing and conduct; for
God above will greet your precious flesh and soul. Unto each
burgess lies their dues of bloom and land; we stand steadfast
and true to serve with head and hand.”
The wind thus blows from across the meadows;
Like circles casting doubt aside from shadows.

Word list: Daydream, alongside, moonbeam.
I like the ethereal quality of this – it seems somehow to enhance the steadfastness of that little bird..

Thank Goodness for the wind, Sanaa. The “lone autumnal
leaf” is thankful I’m sure. Did you know that there are dancing partners one never forgets? The ‘leaf’ won’t forget hers. Like I will never forget one very tine young Russian lady who was trying to teach me to dance better.

By Burgess, I think you mean citizen or free person? And so I read this poem as recording good death in right relationship to one’s country. But it’s still sad, despite the hope you put in. It’s hard to have faith and let the wind dispel faith when death comes too soon to many. But looking in another direction, I see that life is also good for many. Perhaps that oldest leaf of all was ready to die.

Few things can be as difficult to see clear as are civil duties and the fealty we feel we owe to our land. We can spend an entire existence trying to to find a way to cast “doubt aside from shadows.”
